Malfunctioning wood burner in East Butler sends one to the hospital
A wood burner caught fire at a house in East Butler Tuesday night, Nov. 19, sending one person to a hospital for treatment related to smoke inhalation.
The report of the fire came in around 8:15 p.m., and Scott Rattigan, chief of East Butler Volunteer Fire Company, said the department mainly saw heavy smoke coming from the wood burner when they arrived at the residence.
It took some time for the responding fire departments to get the fire under control, but the fire would only leave the building charred and some smoke throughout the residence.
“It was more smoldering than anything,” Rattigan said.
According to Rattigan, the occupants of the building evacuated once the burning started, but East Butler Ambulance took one person to the hospital. The occupants were able to reenter the building Tuesday once the fire was taken care of.
The call took about an hour and 20 minutes to complete, according to a county dispatch report.
In addition to East Butler VFC, Butler Bureau of Fire and Herman VFC responded to the call.
