Malfunctioning wood burner in East Butler sends one to the hospital
A wood burner caught fire at a house in East Butler on Tuesday night, Nov. 19, sending one person to a hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
The report of the fire came in around 8:15 p.m., and Scott Rattigan, chief of East Butler Volunteer Fire Company, said the department mainly saw heavy smoke coming from the wood burner when they arrived at the residence.
It took some time for the responding fire departments to get the fire under control, but the blaze would only leave the building charred and some smoke throughout the residence.
“It was more smoldering than anything,” Rattigan said.
According to Rattigan, the occupants of the building evacuated once the burning started, but East Butler Ambulance took one person to the hospital. The occupants were able to reenter the building Tuesday once the fire was put out.
The call took about an hour and 20 minutes to complete, according to a county dispatch report.
In addition to East Butler, Butler Bureau of Fire and Herman Volunteer Fire Company responded to the call.
