High school roundup: Seneca Valley, Knoch boys basketball rebound with first wins

A day after scoring just 37 points, Seneca Valley erupted for over 30 more in a 72-61 boys basketball victory over Avonworth at Franklin Regional High School on Tuesday.

The Raiders (1-1) featured five players who scored and all of them reached double figures in points, led by Nico Santapau’s 19.

Andrew Omasits added 16 points, Owen Congdon 15, Jaxon Householder 12 and Ryan Priester 10 to help SV break out.

Moniteau 64, Kennedy Catholic 37 — Weston Cook, Brendin Sankey and Connor Ealy each had 12 points in the Warriors’ home win.

Sankey added nine rebounds, and Cook made a pair of 3-pointers.

Knoch 70, Shady Side Academy 38 Knoch rebounded from its season-opening loss with an emphatic home win.

Jackson Bauman scored 16 points in the victory, while Teegan Finucan had 11. The Knights’ bench scored 29 points, including nine each from Vinnie and Roman DeFelice.

North Allegheny 67, Mars 53 The Planets fell behind 36-8 in the first half and never recovered.

Austen Wroblewski led the Planets with 15 points. Austin Campbell had 14, and Ben Detisch added 10.

Girls basketball

Knoch fell behind by 15 points in the first quarter and never recovered in a 59-27 loss to Shaler.

Neah Ewing scored 10 points to lead Knoch (0-3). Reese Barnesser tallied 29 points for Shaler.

Swimming

Reagan Connelly won the 100-yard backstroke and Mars’ girls won all three relays in a 90-76 win over Shaler.

In the boys meet, won by the Planets 91-65, Luke Lamb earned WPIAL cuts in the 50 freestyle and backstroke and Preston Heynes in the 500 freestyle.

Ice hockey

Seneca Valley remained unbeaten on the season with a 4-1 win over Central Catholic on Monday.

Scoring goals for the Raiders (5-0-2-0) were Jimmy Murtha, Braden Morin, Tyler Garvin and John Sroka.

Christopher Nichols made 16 saves to earn the win.
