State police: Thanksgiving weekend crashes, fatalities, DUI arrests increased

State police have reported responding to more crashes and fatalities and making more DUI arrests over Thanksgiving weekend than last year.

Over the five-day weekend from Wednesday, Nov. 27, through Sunday, Dec. 1, troopers responded to 1,075 crashes statewide — including seven in which seven people were killed — and made 552 DUI arrests, according to a report released Monday.

During last year’s five-day Thanksgiving weekend, troopers responded to 979 crashes, including four crashes in which four people were killed, and made 542 DUI arrests, according to the report.

The report from this year’s holiday weekend also stated 194 people were injured in the crashes, 64 of the crashes were DUI-related, and one of the DUI-related crashes resulted in a fatality. State police issued 7,770 speeding citations, 124 citations for child car seat violations, 1,020 citations for seat belt violations, and 21,161 other citations.

There were 73 DUI-related crashes last year.
