Adams Township man sentenced to 2 years imprisonment for shooting at wife
An Adams Township man has been sentenced to a minimum of two years imprisonment and three years of probation in connection with a May incident in which he shot at his wife multiple times.
Jay Palmer, 49, was sentenced Wednesday, Dec. 4, to between two years and five years in prison and three years probation for aggravated assault, and two concurrent periods of two years of probation for endangering the welfare of children.
The sentence was handed down by county Judge Joseph Kubit as part of a plea agreement.
The incident took place on May 11, when Palmer opened fire on his wife, Holly, with a semiautomatic pistol while she was showering, striking her in the abdomen and knee. The two had recently been discussing divorce.
After the couple’s two children wrestled him to the ground, Palmer shot himself in the chest.
Palmer was charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault, two counts of endangering the welfare of children, and one count of recklessly endangering another person.
As part of the plea deal, the charges of attempted homicide and reckless endangerment were thrown out.
Prior to the sentencing, his wife read a statement saying that she was ready to forgive Jay for what happened, and that she blamed the incident on his use of alcohol.
“The boys and I are OK, and we are ready to forgive you,” she said. “Alcohol turned you into a different person, and it always did. The thought of you being shipped off to a prison makes me sick.”
Palmer choked back sobs during the sentencing as he explained that he had never done anything like that prior to the incident.
“I love my family more than anything on God’s green earth. I’ve never done anything like this,” Palmer said. “I don’t want you to worry about me. I’m going to be OK.”
