Jewish dishes baked for pre-Hanukkah celebrations in 2004
Jewish congregations from Butler, Sharon and New Castle worked together in 2004 to reach more of the Jewish community — and no collaborative meeting is complete without a snack.
The Congregation B'nai Abraham on North Main Street in Butler hosted a cooking demonstration on Dec. 5, 2004, for its members and members of Beth Israel in Sharon and Hadar Israel in New Castle.
The congregations demonstrated to children how to make sufganiyot, a traditional Jewish doughnut, shared in a meal, led readings and joined in song together at the gathering.
Rabbi Candy Lobb, of Hadar Israel, said joint activities have helped the congregations’ children through exposure to peers and in broadening their perspective.
“Usually, the number of Jews in an Eastern to Midwestern community is not that large,” Lobb said. ”(The communities) tend to be fairly tightly knit. Because of that, kids know there is something bigger than just the small Jewish community within the local city.”
