Marjorie McCandless
Marjorie F. McCandless (née Foster) passed peacefully Tuesday, Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2024, at Hope Hospice House in Cape Coral, Fla. She was 99.
Marjorie was born to Quay H. and Gyla N. Foster (née Gilmore) May 17, 1925, in Harrisville. In the mid-1940s, she graduated from what was then the State Teachers College of Indiana, Pa., with a degree in music studies.
In 1951, she married her longtime beau, John D. McCandless, also of Harrisville. They settled in Franklin, Pa., shortly thereafter, where Dr. McCandless opened a practice for podiatric medicine.
Marjorie taught in the Oil City school system, beginning in the mid-1960s teaching elementary spelling and music. Subsequently, she taught music at the secondary level. In the mid-1970s she obtained a master’s degree in guidance counseling and concluded her career in the mid-1980s as a secondary-level guidance counselor. She was active in the Venango Chorus/Choral Society and the Community Concerts organization, as well as the musical programs of Hasson Heights Presbyterian Church in Oil City and the First Presbyterian Church of Franklin.
Following the death of Dr. McCandless in 1995, Marjorie moved to Mystic, Conn., residing with her daughter, Joyce, and split her time between there and Fort Myers, Fla. In 2008, Mrs. McCandless moved to Fort Myers full time. She resided at Lexington Country Club until late 2014, when declining health prompted a move to The Palms of Fort Myers, first to the independent living unit, subsequently to assisted living, and finally to memory care, where Hope Hospice provided supplemental support.
She is survived by a sister, Eva Joyce Connor of Fairview, Pa.; and daughters, Judith Williams and Joyce McCandless, of Houston, Texas, and Punta Gorda, Fla., respectively. In addition, Marjorie has four grandsons and five great-grandchildren.
Marjorie was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Q. Foster, of Grove City.
