Police: Butler man arrested for threatening to take local 7-Eleven hostage

A Butler man is facing charges after police were called to the 7-Eleven on East Jefferson Street for a report of a man threatening to take the store hostage.

Bryan Frederick Hurley, 37, of Butler, was taken into custody by Butler city police early in the morning of Nov 26. He was charged Tuesday, Dec. 3, with felonies terroristic threats and evading arrest and misdemeanors resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

According to the criminal complaint, a 7-Eleven employee called the police after he said Hurley approached him from behind and whispered “I am going to take this store hostage. And if I can’t take this store, I’ll take the other store.”

Out of an abundance of caution, the employee locked down the store and, believing the reference to the other store meant the 7-Eleven across town, contacted them and recommended they lock down as well.

According to police, Hurley left the store after making the threat, but he was later located in the area of Cross Street. Police officers attempted to speak to Hurley, but he refused to cooperate, yelling and holding up his fists in a “fighting stance,” warning officers not to approach him, the criminal complaint said.

When Frederick attempted to flee, police used a Taser to subdue him. He was taken into custody after being found fit by EMS workers called to the scene.
