Connoquenessing supervisors table consideration of roadside marker

CONNOQUENESSING TWP — Supervisors tabled a motion at a meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 4, regarding a historical roadside marker to commemorate the attempted assassination of President-elect Donald Trump at the Butler Farm Show grounds in July.

The Jewish American Society for Historic Preservation, a nonprofit that works to collect and preserve American Jewish history, initially reached out via email on Nov. 14, asking if it could give the marker to the township.

No other pertinent information about the proposed marker was provided to the township, according to secretary Megan Hineman.

After the topic was brought up for discussion, supervisor Angela Fleeger made it clear that officials should take time to gather more information before taking any further action.

“I find this whole thing very interesting,” she said. “I would like to know a little bit more about it, though, before we move forward with it. Just a little more information as far as what’s going to be on it, location and those kinds of things.”

It is unclear where the roadside marker would be placed in the township, although Butler Farm Show President Ken Laughlin rejected the notion that it would be on Farm Show grounds.

“I can assure you it won’t be on Farm Show property,” Laughlin said during public discussion of the matter.

The Farm Show grounds became a national focus after the assassination attempt July 13.

In addition to Trump’s ear being grazed by a bullet, Buffalo Township firefighter Corey Comperatore was killed and two others were critically injured when 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire during the rally. He was killed seconds later by counter-snipers.

Supervisors agreed to pursue more information in the coming weeks before considering approval at the Dec. 30 meeting.
