Weather knocks out power, closes schools Thursday morning
National Weather Service in Pittsburgh issued a winter weather advisory Thursday morning, Dec. 5, which will remain in effect until at least 7 a.m. Friday.
The weather service forecast snow accumulations between 2 and 4 inches, and winds gusting as high as 40 mph in the Western Pennsylvania region, including Butler County. The snow and cold weather could impact Thursday morning commutes because of slippery road conditions.
School districts throughout Butler County have delayed or canceled school because of the weather Thursday.
Public school districts operating on a two-hour delay included Butler Area School District, Butler County Area Vocational-Technical School, Freeport Area School District, Karns City Area School District, Knoch School District, Mars Area School District, Moniteau School District, Seneca Valley School District and Slippery Rock Area School District.
Allegheny-Clarion Valley School District has no school Thursday.
In Butler County, 204 customers of West Penn Power are without electricity Thursday morning, 68 of them in Bruin. Central Electric Cooperative reported 193 customers were without power as of 7:30 a.m. Thursday, with 161 of those being in Summit Township. The cooperative estimated power would be restored around 10 a.m.
The Butler County 911 Center reported several fires overnight, and crews were dispatched for vehicle crashes and alarms as well.
