Knoch Music Boosters hold 3rd annual Cookie Walk
SAXONBURG — What is better than cookies at Christmas? If you ask those who took part in the Cookie Walk at the Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Company on Saturday, Dec. 7, it’s cookies that you don’t have to make yourself.
It was a steady stream of shoppers from the moment the doors opened at the event at 11 a.m. Boxes of cookies at the cost of $12 a dozen, $20 for two dozen, were being sold by the Knoch Music Boosters, to raise money for upcoming trips and events.
“We’re raising funds for the spring trip for our music students at the Knoch Music School and for the two PNC performances that they have in May,” said Courtney Dekker, Knoch Music Boosters president.
The trip to Baltimore is about more than just music for the high school seniors who will get to participate.
“They get to see a show, they to have an education experience with one of the college educators there. They get to go to a dine-and-show event. And then they get to go to the Maritime Museum and the aquarium. It will be a fun weekend away while they still learn a lot about music and experience the city,” said Dekker.
In addition to the cookies being sold, baskets donated by businesses were raffled off and a cookie station was set up for those who wanted to put their decorating skills to good use. Hot chocolate and a Letter to Santa station rounded out the event.
Parents of the students not only volunteered but also came to purchase the wares donated by both business and booster parents.
“My daughter Isabella is in the women’s ensemble chorus,” said Melissa Davis. “She had other stuff to do today so I told her I would come up here and help the music boosters out.”
Emily Troyan of Penn Township was happy to get a start on holiday items on her list.
“It’s such a great way to start the holidays off,” said Troyan. “And the cookies are great. The best part being I don’t have to bake them.”
With so many pitching in to make the event a success, Dekker was more than grateful.
“I’m overwhelmed with the amazing amount of support that we’ve had from the local businesses for the gift baskets and the cookies, and even the fire hall working with us to make sure that we can afford to run a fundraiser without having a huge overhead cost,” said Dekker. “We are just so thankful and happy that everyone is contributing so much.”
