High school roundup: Vita Vargo, Mars girls basketball beat rival Knoch
Vita Vargo scored 20 points while going 7 of 11 from the foul line to lead Mars girls basketball to a 48-29 win over Knoch.
Vargo made three 3-pointers and scored 15 of her points in the second half. Alexis Cashdollar added seven points. The Knights got 10 points apiece from Neah Ewing and Karlee Buterbaugh.
Clarion-Limestone 51, Union/A-C Valley 32 — Maddy Dehart drained four 3s and finished with 18 points and nine rebounds to lead the Falcon Knights in a losing effort. Kya Wetzel scored 10 points and had three blocks.
Shady Side Academy 53, Seneca Valley 45 — Gracie Cato scored 23 points in a losing effort, and Natalie Hambly added 14 points off four 3-pointers. Karis Thomas had a game-high 30 for the Bulldogs.
Knoch beat Erie McDowell 58-49 Saturday in the Erie McDowell Tip-Off Tournament championship game. Jackson Bauman scored 20 poitns, Teegan Finucan 16 and Derek Lang 11.
Butler’s boys and girls teams improved to 2-0 with 7-0 wins over Rochester on Friday. Makenzie ZImmerman led the girls with a 548 series and 227 high game; David Shever shot a 585 series with a 245 high game.
Knoch lost its first dual-meet as a program 48-12 to Pine-Richland on Monday. Braylee Ireland (124 pounds) and Carma Forty (136) picked up pinfall victories, with Ireland’s coming in 2:53 and Forty’s in 4:55.
It was a pin fest at Pine-Richland on Monday, with the Rams coming out ahead of Knoch 48-30.
Every contested match was decided by fall. Knoch’s five victories came from Wyatt Foster (215 pounds) with a pin at the first-period buzzer, Jarrett Crowe (127) at 1:59, Owen Layhew (145) at 3:55, Brayden McGowan (152) at 2:25 and Derrick Glover (160) at 3:29.
