High school roundup: Butler boys wrestling downs Mars, Planets hoops get back on track

Nicholas Savannah (114 pounds), Charlie Rodgers (139), Leo Iarrapino (145), Troy Ritson (189), Ace McElravy (215), and Diamond Cantera (285) all won by pinfall as Butler’s boys wrestling team dispatched Mars by a 58-15 count Wednesday night.

The Golden Tornado’s Kase Chopp (152) defeated Liam Hein by technical fall, putting him just one win away from 100 for his career.

Girls Basketball

Savannah Prescott bucketed 13 points and Naomi Venesky another 12 as Karns City defeated Punxsutawney 43-34 on the road.

North Catholic 42, Oakland Catholic 34 — Sam Weir had 19 points and the Trojanettes raced out to a 21-4 first-quarter lead in the win.

Erie 45, Butler 40 — Amelia McMichael posted 16 points, but the Golden Tornado dropped their home opener. Butler (3-2) travels to face McDowell on Saturday.

Boys Basketball

Austen Wroblewski had 26 points, including six three-pointers, as Mars got back in the win column with a 59-31 decision over Perry. Ben Detisch added nine points.

Bowling

Hannah Windows rolled a 637 series and Kylie McConahy 609 as Freeport’s girls bowling team defeated Armstrong 7-0 Wednesday night. Windows had the match’s best game, turning in a 253.

On the boys’ side, the River Hawks won 7-0 behind Josh Fester’s 664 series. Colin Cummings rolled a 742 series for Freeport.
