Time capsule: Outdoor worker unbothered by winter blitz of December 2010
The arrival of blustering wind, freezing temperatures and accumulating snow on Dec. 15, 2010, was uncomfortable and inconvenient to some Butler County residents, while others had waited for it all year.
The effects of the wintry blast went to a whole new level for people working in the great outdoors, like Theresa Clendenning, who enjoyed working as a Butler Area School District crossing guard in the winter.
“I love snow. I love the winter. I love it all,” said Clendenning, of Butler.
Temperatures dipped down to 12 degrees in Butler on Dec. 14, 2010, lows that also came with winds reaching 18 mph and a high chance for snow, according to archived data from National Weather Service Pittsburgh.
For three one-hour shifts that day, Clendenning manned the corner of West Penn and Washington streets. The seasoned crossing guard knew to double up almost every article of clothing for the day, from her socks to her hats.
“And turtle necks are pulled all the way up,” Clendenning said. “No rolling them down.”
