Man arrested for ATV theft following chase at Worth Township campground
State police arrested a man who was wanted by Slippery Rock police for stealing a side-by-side all-terrain vehicle earlier this week.
Legend T. Barlow, 33, of Mercer, was charged with felony counts of theft and receiving stolen property and misdemeanor unauthorized use of a vehicle by Slippery Rock police, and a felony count of criminal trespass by state police after troopers found Barlow and the ATV at a campground in Worth Township.
Slippery Rock police said the ATV owner reported on Monday, Dec. 9, that the vehicle had been stolen from her backyard on Dec. 7. Later, the owner called police and reported that the ATV had been seen near Interstate 79 and then called again saying it had been seen being driven on Route 173 toward Route 8, police said.
An officer called state police to advise them about the theft, and state police told the officer that they saw the social media posts and recognized the driver as Barlow, according to an affidavit.
After receiving reports about sightings of the ATV, an officer went to a gas station on Tuesday, Dec. 10, to look at video footage that showed Barlow pulling in on the ATV, filling it with gas and buying merchandise, according to the affidavit.
Shortly after 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, troopers located the ATV at the Slippery Rock Campgrounds. As they were securing the scene, a person was heard inside a camper and then Barlow fled out of the camper’s back window, according to an affidavit.
He was apprehended after a chase. The owner of the camper told troopers that she does not know Barlow, and he did not have permission to be in the camper, police said.
