Thanks for Veterans Day support
I would like to express a deep appreciation to the Butler Eagle, local businesses, local state officials, veteran organizations and especially the patriotic citizens of Butler County for the positive recognition and support given this past Veterans Day.
The reporting and positive show of patriotism that was expressed in this year’s parade, Veteran of the Year ceremony, and by all who participated in the local events was very impressive.
The article in the Butler Eagle regarding combat veteran Staff Sgt. Robert Zang was accurate and educational. Robert, like many others in our area, nearly made the ultimate sacrifice for his country, receiving two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star for Valor during the Vietnam War. A true soldier and true patriot.
Also, selected as Butler Veteran of the Year by his local veteran peers was Gary Neely. Gary also served near Khe Sanh in the Marines during the same time as Robert Zang. Gary, a machine-gunner, was also wounded, recovered and returned, receiving three Purple Hearts during combat in Vietnam.
Both returned home shaken but not deterred from becoming husbands, fathers and very viable citizens of the this community.
Interestingly, Butler County is the only county in Pennsylvania that honors a Veteran of the Year, recognizing one’s service to our country, service to community and continued patriotism.
