Time Capsule: Toilet takes community tour in December 2001

Cheryl Harancher, of Evans City, was thrilled to see a toilet under a tree in front of her home on Dec. 18, 2001.

The commode had been to several other homes in Mars, Butler, and Cranberry and Forward townships as part of the Phantom Flusher fundraiser for the St. John’s United Church of Christ, which charged people $20 to remove the toilet from their residences.

For $5 more, the most recent victim of the Phantom Flusher could send the throne to another victim of their choosing.

The Haranchers were happy to finally get in on the action, after several other members of the church had already been visited by the Ghost of Toilets Present.

“I was waiting to get it. I was excited to get it,” Harancher said. “Everyone else had gotten it, and I was sort of feeling left out because I hadn’t.”
