Karns City girls basketball loses first game of season to Redbank Valley as offense goes cold

KARNS CITY — Getting looks is one thing. Converting them? Another.

After yet another missed try in the third quarter of his team’s 50-38 home loss to Redbank Valley Thursday night, Karns City girls basketball coach Steve Andreassi turned to an assistant coach and let them know his team was generating opportunities.

What was implied in that statement spoke for itself on the court.

The Gremlins (6-1) watched the game swing by 22 points over a span of 10 minutes, 4 seconds in which they didn’t add to the scoreboard. All said, Karns City went 13:10 without a made field goal, aiding a 19-2 Bulldogs (6-0) run.

“It’s finishing, and that’s a mental thing,” Andreassi said after the game. “It’s not rushing shots. It’s not throwing up garbage shots. Not playing off of two feet. We didn’t do that at times. You’ve got to play off of two feet when you’re in the paint. You’ve got to get to the paint, and you’ve got to ball fake. We don’t ball fake. That’s all we talked about leading up to this game.

“Physically, we’re fine. It’s the mental aspect of the game that we need to continue to work on.”

Prior to the scoring drought, senior Chloe Fritch’s tough-nosed lay-in made it 27-22 earlier in the frame. At one point after that, Redbank Valley’s Mylee Harmon was forced to the bench in danger of fouling out.

“Pretty much everything (went wrong),” Andreassi said. “We definitely didn’t take advantage of their best player sitting on the bench. Matter of fact, they out-scored us during that stretch. It’s about figuring the game out, figuring the situation out — and we’re still working at it.”

Adyson Bond’s successful trip to the foul line tied it at 27-all with 2:49 remaining before the fourth quarter. Kira Bonanno had a pair of 2-for-2 trips to the stripe that bookended Andreassi’s comment to his assistant. Elaina Carrico also made a stop there before Bonnano’s step-back 3-pointer rang in the final frame.

“We basically gave the game a little bit by fouling,” Fritch said. “We had their players on the bench, which is what we wanted to do. We just opened the gate for them easily. ... Opening that window up to give them that many fouls — being able to go to the line — that kind of put us behind and it was hard to catch up.”

Trying to go inside didn’t work for the Gremlins, who shot 11 of 52 (21.2%) from the field.

“We were settling for 3s all the time,” Andreassi said. “Just not a mentally-tough or mentally-focused game for us (in the) second half.”

“Kira controlled the inside,” Bulldogs coach Chris Edmonds said. “They got some rebounds, but Kira definitely stepped up and controlled the middle.”

Redbank Valley’s Harmon led all scorers with 15 points. Bond finished with 13 and Bonanno 11. Brooklynn Taylor paced the hosts with 11 points.
