Known by locals as “Burrito Man,” Gerardo Gutierrez has officially opened a physical location for his passion — serving up authentic Mexican cuisine — at the former Hoagie Shop store at 110 N. McKean St. in Butler.

Over the past few years, Gutierrez has been selling his famous burritos at various small businesses around Butler, such as the Donut Connection, but now his fans can come straight to the source after he opened his takeout location on Dec. 14.

“It’s picking up,” Gutierrez said. “This week has been good, and it’s been steady in here.”

At the moment, the menu consists of breakfast burritos with meat choices of sausage and bacon, topped with egg and cheese.

His lunch burritos can be a mixture of chicken, hot sausage or ground beef, topped with rice, beans and guacamole.

“I enjoy talking to people and the cooking,” Gutierrez said. “Some people will call in the morning and I take the orders. I make everything and just go deliver.”

Gutierrez, who was born in Acapulco and immigrated to Laguna Beach from Tijuana in 1980 as a teenager, married Butler native Tammy Gutierrez, later making the move to Butler County, and eventually started his burrito business.

Then, back in August 2023, one day Gutierrez slipped and hit his head. He later found that he had suffered three brain bleeds.

He was unable to work for a while, but a GoFundMe was set up for him, and the donations were able to help keep Gutierrez and his family supported for a while.

Today, Gutierrez said he has recovered well from his fall, and he is looking forward to continuing to serve the Butler community.

He continues his strong social media presence, keeping his customers updated throughout his journey.

“Butler has helped me a lot,” Gutierrez said. “I raised my kids here, and I have met a lot of people. This is home for me.”

Gutierrez’s store is open from 7 a.m. to noon Tuesdays through Saturdays.
