Man sentenced in woman’s drug overdose
A former Cranberry Township man was sentenced to probation for providing cocaine to a woman who overdosed in February 2023.
John F. Gilliland, 51, of Panama City, Fla., was sentenced Thursday to serve one year minus one day to two years minus two days in prison, but was immediately paroled to serve the minimum balance of his sentence on electric monitoring followed by 24 months of probation and pay a $250 fine.
He pleaded guilty to a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver filed by township police, who responded to the Residence Inn Hotel in Cranberry around 5 p.m. Feb. 4 for report of a 31-year-old female who overdosed. She was treated at a Pittsburgh hospital, where she was initially listed to be in critical condition.
A witness told police the woman had been in contact with Gilliland, who sent an ride-share car to bring the witness and the woman to the hotel.
Messages exchanged between the woman and Gilliland show Gilliland offering crack cocaine in exchange of sexual acts, and photos of the narcotics, police said.
The witness told officers that following the woman’s overdose, Gilliland collected paraphernalia and narcotics from her hotel room and placed them outside the window in a bag. Police said they found a large number of used and new syringes, marijuana and crack cocaine pipes, spoons, straws, and naloxone inside the bag.
In Gilliland’s hotel room, police said they found 9 grams of suspected cocaine and paraphernalia.
He was initially charged with possession with intent to deliver, criminal use of a communication facility and possession of drug paraphernalia.
