Herman business faces economic challenges
SUMMIT TWP — Liz Schnur, owner of the Herman Mini Mart, is facing a period of economic hardship after a nearly two-year legal battle.
Schnur made a post on the Herman Mini Mart’s Facebook page Thursday, Dec. 19, in which she discussed her frustrations with an ongoing criminal case related to a prior theft.
Amanda Fennell, a former employee at the mini mart, was charged with felony theft in June 2023. According to documents, Fennell scratched 566 stolen lottery tickets worth $5,514 between Feb. 20 and Feb. 27, 2023.
Fennell pleaded guilty to a third degree retail theft charge on Nov. 4. A sentencing was scheduled for Dec. 19, but results were unavailable Friday.
Schnur said she made the post after being repeatedly asked by regulars for updates.
“I can’t bear to say it over and over again to each and every one of you,” Schnur said.
Schnur is also facing a battle at home as her husband, Adam, has fallen ill. Liz said the lack of restitution payments have made medical bills another major challenge to keeping the business afloat.
The Herman community is standing strong behind Schnur, whose Facebook post has seen an outpouring of support. Schnur said she is proud to call Herman her home.
“They’re precious,” Schnur said. “My community is my family.”
A GoFundMe was established with permission from Schnur, and has raised nearly $1,000 as of Friday evening.
