Northern Butler County residents can begin reaping the benefits of a new electronic vehicle charging station courtesy of the federally funded National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program (NEVI).

The station, located off Interstate 79 in Worth Township, is one of two announced by the Department of Transportation on Friday, Dec. 20. It brings the number of stations in the state that were funded by the program to five.

Worth Township’s new charging station will operate from a Love’s Travel Stops location at 1011 New Castle Road and support four ports. Each port will be provide at least 300 kW of power.

According to a news release, the two new stations mark a $1.32 million investment in federal funding through NEVI, which is a part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

“Pennsylvania is strengthening the network of EV chargers and improving reliability for drivers with every new station,” PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll said in the news release. “Under the leadership of Gov. (Josh) Shapiro, we’re making a clean and reliable transportation future possible for Pennsylvania travelers.”

While charging vehicles under weather-resistant canopies, customers will have access to travel stop amenities, which include fast-food restaurants, Wi-Fi, fresh food and beverage options, clean restrooms and dog parks.

“I can see where it could benefit with its proximity to I-79,” said Worth Township Supervisor Chairman Fred Brezel. “I’m sure it will be helpful in drawing business to that area.”

While there is an ample supply of electronic vehicle charging stations in the southern portion of the county, they are far more spread out in the northern portion.

There are two stations nearby in Slippery Rock and Portersville, along with multiple stations a bit farther north in Grove City.
