High school roundup: Vita Vargo, Mars girls win in South Carolina; Knoch boys’ win streak ends

Behind 19 points from Vita Vargo, Mars downed St. Agnes Academy (Texas) 40-38 in girls basketball action Friday. Vargo sank four 3-pointers in the win at the Carolina Invitational in Charleston, S.C.

The Planets (5-2) face off against Oceanside Collegiate Academy (S.C.) on Saturday afternoon.

North Catholic 71, Norwin 49 — Sarah Loughry’s double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds highlighted this win for the Trojanettes (6-2), winners of six straight.

Brady Wehner scored 19 points for North, which outscored the Knights 20-4 in the fourth quarter. Sam Weir added 15 points.

Karns City 43, Slippery Rock 36 — Savanna Prescott paced the Gremlins with eight points, and Brooklynn Taylor had seven as they beat the Rockets at Lakeview High School.

Slippery Rock’s Madison Romanovich poured in a game-high 14 points.

North Allegheny 67, Knoch 27 — Neah Ewing and Karlee Buterbaugh scored 11 points apiece in Friday’s loss in the first round of the North Allegheny Holiday Tournament.

The Knights (3-6) will face Penn Hills at 1 p.m. Sunday to conclude the tournament.

Lakeview 59, Moniteau 28 — Sophia Fleeger had 10 points and three assists for the Warriors in the defeat.

Boys basketball

Andrew Omasits led Seneca Valley’s balanced scoring performance with 16 points as the Raiders defeated Shaler 62-53 at the Plum Tournament.

Nico Santapau added 14 points for SV (4-6), Owen Congdon 12 and Tyler Pepin 11.

Mars 64, Hampton 49 — Austen Wroblewski led all scorers with 23 points as the Planets won at the Hampton Holiday Tournament.

Austin Campbell scored 15 points for Mars (5-3), Ben Detisch 13 and Drew Navetta nine.

Greater Johnstown 45, Knoch 44 — Despite 12 points from both Jackson Bauman and Teegan Finucan, the Knights (7-2) fell to the Trojans in the Central Valley Roundball Classic held at Geneva College.

Knoch had its seven-game winning streak snapped.
