Butler man charged with traffic violations, attempting to elude officer

SUMMIT TWP — Saxonburg police charged a man Monday, Dec. 23, with careless driving and attempting to elude an officer after failing to stop for police on the night of Nov. 8.

According to charging documents, Ernest Westerman, 75, of Butler, was first spotted driving without headlights by police in Buffalo Township. Police signaled for Westerman to stop with lights and sirens, but he failed to do so.

Buffalo Township police eventually handed the pursuit to Saxonburg Borough Police, as Westerman continued into Summit Township, according to the report.

The vehicle was spotted by Saxonburg police traveling northbound on Route 356. Police said Westerman was driving without headlights and flashed his high beams repeatedly to oncoming traffic.

According to the police complaint, despite emergency signals and utilization of the patrol vehicle’s PA system, Westerman continued driving. Police also reported he did not maintain his lane of travel.

Westerman finally came to a stop at his residence on Bullcreek Road, where police questioned him and conducted a field sobriety test. Police said they had a lengthy conversation with Westerman about his actions and informed him of pending charges.

Buffalo Township police filed charges in November related to the interaction with Westerman earlier that day. He was charged with failing to yield to an emergency vehicle, attempting to elude an officer and failing to use his headlights.
