High school roundup: Josh Book’s 29 leads Slippery Rock boys past Moniteau; Butler wrestling finishes 2nd

Slippery Rock boys basketball held on to beat Cranberry 65-61 to sweep its own holiday tournament Saturday and continue a strong start to the season.

One night after he scored 24 points with a double-double in a win, Josh Book led the Rockets (6-2) again with 29 points. Doug Popovec contributed 14 in the victory

The Berries (6-3) made things interesting, scoring 22 points in the fourth quarter to cut a 52-39 SRHS lead down to just a four-point victory.

In the other game of the Shippensburg Holiday Tournament, Freeport thumped Moniteau 70-33 to go 1-1 for the weekend.

Carson Kane paced a balanced Yellowjackets (2-6) offense with 13 points. Cameron Zigo and Owen Westendorf recorded nine points apiece, and CJ Walker and Dempsey Cowan scored eight each.

The Warriors (2-8), who went 0-2 at the tournament, got 15 points from Brendin Sankey.

Butler 66, Taylor Allderdice 60 — Tayt Lucas scored a team-high 22 points on 50% shooting (7 of 14) while making four 3-pointers.

Ayden Andrews scored 13 points to go along with seven rebounds, and Andrew Gettinger had 15 points, seven boards, four blocks and three steals.

Butler trailed 34-30 at halftime before scoring 22 points in the third quarter to pull ahead.

Mars 83, North Hills 55 — Austen Wroblewski recorded at least his fifth 20-point game Saturday, leading Mars to a 2-0 record in the Hampton Holiday Tournament.

Ben Detisch joined Wroblewski on the all-tournament team with a double-double, including a game-high 23 points. Drew Navetta drained 21 points, all on treys. The Planets (6-3, 2-0 section) made 18 3-pointers: Wroblewski drained four, Navetta seven and Detisch four.

Seneca Valley 51, Plum 25 — The Raiders won their fourth straight to improve to 5-6 (2-1 section). Andrew Omasits scored a game-high 16 points for Seneca Valley, with Nico Santapau adding 12 on four 3s and Tyler Pepin chipping in 10.

Summit Academy 75, River Valley 51 — The Knights went 2-0 at the Apollo-Ridge Christmas Tournament with Saturday’s win. Demetreius Crosby scored 36 points in the victory. Ky’zir Rowan added 12 and Robert Young 10.

That followed a 67-47 win Friday over Apollo-Ridge in which Crosby scored 19, Rowan 16 and Young 10.

Girls basketball

Lillian Holloway scored 22 points in a high-scoring affair Freeport won 72-54 over Valley at the St. Joseph’s Holiday Tournament. Holloway sank four 3-pointers in the win.

The Yellowjackets, who lost Friday’s game against the hosts 54-51, improved to 2-6 with Saturday’s win.

Nia DiSanti dropped 13 and Maggie Conger 12 for Freeport.

Mars 35, Oceanside Collegiate Academy (S.C.) — Alexis Cashdollar led the Planets (6-2) with 14 points while Vita Vargo scored seven to improve to 2-0 at the Carolina Invitational in Charleston, S.C. Mars plays Nitro (W.Va) at 9 a.m. Monday to conclude the tournament.

Slippery Rock 46, Moniteau 39 — Madison Romanovich scored a game-high 16 points and brought down 10 rebounds in the Rockets’ win at the Lakeview Christmas Classic, making the all-tournament team as well.

Brielle Jordan chipped in 12 points and four boards for Slippery Rock (7-2). CJ Sabo reached double figures with 11 points, adding seven rebounds and four assists.

Sophia Fleegar led the Warriors (3-8) with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Alyssa Thompson and Maddy Eury had 11 points each.

Seneca Valley 71, Plum 65 — The Raiders won their fifth in their last six and split their two games at Shady Side Academy’s Peter Sauer Memorial Tournament.

Natalie Hambly led all scorers with 23 points, while teammates Reece McFadden and Gracie Cato scored 21 and 15 points, respectively, for SV.

Karns City 30, Lakeview 27 — Brooklyn Taylor dropped 15 points, making three treys, to lead the Gremlins to victory in the Lakeview Classic. Taylor was named tournament MVP.

Naomi Venesky made the all-tournament team with eight points and 11 rebounds Saturday.

Boys wrestling

Butler placed second in the Southmoreland Holiday Classic with 188.5 points, , which took place Friday and Saturday at Southmoreland High School.

Nicholas Savannah (107 pounds) and Santino Sloboda (127) won the title in their respective classes, the former by 5-2 decision over Freedom Area’s Kayden Braun and the latter by pinning Fox Chapel’s Landon Funk.

Frazier’s Jonah Erdely downed Gavin Rush 4-3 in the 152-pound championship finals. Kase Chopp (145) was a third-place finisher, winning by technical fall over Corry Area’s William Allen.

Corry Area was the top team with 200.5 points. North Catholic finished 17th with 81.5 points. The Trojans’ Victor Wagner placed second at 114 and Michael Pierro third at 107.
