Police: Butler man headbutted officer
A Butler man is charged with assault after police say he headbutted an officer while being arrested on Saturday, Dec. 21.
Mitchell S. Dongilli, 21, of Butler, was arrested after acting erratically in the area of North Washington Street, but the situation escalated when he attempted to lunge head first toward an officer at the Butler County Prison, police said.
He is facing charges for felony aggravated assault and summary public drunkenness.
Dongilli was detained by state police Dec. 21 at about 11 p.m., after they received a call about a man in a blue hoodie and black pants seen wandering around the property on North Washington Street. Police said he was spotted on private property carrying a plank of wood.
While traveling to the location, dispatchers notified the officers that the male was headed toward Main Street, according to the police report. Police said they found a man matching the description at the Dunkin’ Donuts on North Main Street.
When asked about being at the other location, Dongilli said he was being chased, according to the police report, seeming erratic and paranoid.
During questioning at Dunkin’ Donuts, police said, Dongilli refused to provide officers with identification, so he was taken into custody. Once police put him into a patrol car, Dongilli did provide his identifying information to officers.
Officers traveled to the North Washington Street location and there found the plank of wood that was referenced in the initial call, along with a baggy containing a crystalline substance suspected to be methamphetamine, according to the police report.
At the station, where Dongilli was being held, police said, he became erratic again and attempted to headbutt an officer. Four officers were able to “decentralize” Dongilli, police said.
