2 hospitalized after tree falls on pickup truck in Cherry Township
CHERRY TWP — The driver and passenger of a pickup truck were transported to separate hospitals and are reportedly in “stable” condition after a single-vehicle accident on Branchton Road in Cherry Township Monday, Dec. 30.
The crash was reported at about 4 p.m. near a cemetery on Branchton Road, and occurred when a GMC Sierra pickup truck plowed into a tree in a wooded area. According to scanner reports, the tree then fell on top of the vehicle, injuring both occupants.
“It was a single-vehicle crash into a tree,” said state police Trooper Philip Treadway. “(The vehicle) was traveling at a high rate of speed, so the tree came down on the vehicle after it hit.”
A medical helicopter was called to the scene, and took the driver of the pickup to UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh, while the passenger of the pickup was taken by ambulance to AHN Grove City.
“They’re stable, but they were taken as a precautionary measure,” Treadway said.
During the response, Branchton Road was closed at the intersection with West Sunbury Road.
Aside from the state police, volunteer fire departments from West Sunbury, Marion Township and Slippery Rock assisted at the scene.
