BUTLER TWP — At 6-foot-6, Butler junior Andrew Gettinger appears out of place at point guard.
In actuality, he feels right at home.
Gettinger tallied 15 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three blocked shots Monday night as the Golden Tornado boys basketball team defeated Fairview 75-50 in the Butler gym.
Butler (7-3) never trailed in the contest and led by as many as 28 with two minutes to play.
“My job as point guard is to get everybody involved, facilitate the basketball,” Gettinger said. “We have a bunch of guys who can hit from outside and I have to be able to set them up for their shots.”
The Tornado sank 12 treys in the game and placed four players in double figures.
“I challenge Andrew a lot, get on him at times,” Butler coach Matt Clement admitted. “But I wouldn’t be playing him (at the point) if I didn’t think he’d be effective at it. Other teams play him differently ... If there’s a smaller kid on him, we post him up right away.
“The other guys on the floor have to realize what’s happening that way and we’re doing a good job of that. We’re getting four in double figures almost every game. That’s making us hard to defend.”
Stainton Forbes had 18 points and six rebounds for the Tornado. Tayt Lucas added 17 points — including five treys — and Ayden Andrews struck for 15 points. Kyle Casteel had six rebounds.
Butler returns to Section 1-6A play Friday night when it hosts Woodland Hills.
“We had some things we had to fix over Christmas break and I think we did,” Cement said. “Not that anything was broken ... We just have to elevate our play a little bit. We’re off to a rough start in a very good section.
“There’s a lot of games left to play, so we’ve got time. But we have to continue to improve.”
Clement said the final two quarter against Taylor Allderdice on Saturday, along with the four quarters Monday night, marked some of his team’s most consistent play to date this season.
“We didn’t play well in the first two quarters against Allderdice,” he said. “Andrew’s play, in fact, kept us from getting blown out early in that game. His game is rounding into form.”
Gettinger said he prides himself in being a complete player.
“I just want to put my teammates in position to succeed, do whatever I can to help our team win,” he said.
Tyler DiVecchio led Fairview (6-3) with 12 points, 11 rebounds and a pair of steals. Will Harmston netted 10 points.
Fairview reached the state quarterfinals in 2022 and returned to the PIAA tourney in 2023. It finished third in its district last season. The Tigers are one of 18 Class 4A teams in Erie County.
“The competition is really rough up there,” Fairview coach Pat Flaherty said. “We come down to the Pittsbirgh area for single games over the holidays every year, just for a different type of competition.”
Butler changed up defenses often during the course of Monday’s game.
“We wanted to give them (Tigers) different looks, make them uncomfortable,” Clement said. “They run a regimented, effective offense and we didn’t want them to settle in.”
Flaherty described his team as “still young, since we started a bunch of freshmen and sophomores last year. We want to get the program back to where we were (in 2022). We’re getting there.”
