Man charged with waiving knife in Butler pizza shop

A man is facing more than a dozen charges after police said he waived a knife around inside a downtown Butler pizza shop.

Butler police charged Troy Whitmire 28, with eight felony counts of aggravated assault and terroristic threats and a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct following the Dec. 19 incident at the Domino’s Pizza on South Main Street.

An officer was dispatched at 10:16 p.m. and encountered a customer outside who reported that another man pointed a knife at him in the shop. The officer saw Whitmire through the window and ordered him to get on the ground, according to an affidavit.

He threw a pocketknife across the floor as he was getting on the ground, police said.

Seven employees told police that Whitmire was acting irate, threw a tip jar on the floor, brandished a pocketknife with the blade extended and began waiving it around, according to the affidavit.

The customer who was outside the shop tried to talk to Whitmire to diffuse the situation, but Whitmire pointed the knife at him, according to the affidavit. Customers then left the shop and employees remained behind the front counter, police said.

Whitmire’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 13.
