Butler man charged with threatening woman

A Butler man was arrested Wednesday, Jan. 1, and jailed on $100,000 bond for threatening to shoot a woman in her Clay Township home last week.

State police charged Derrick D. Cotten, 29, with misdemeanor charges of simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, terroristic threats, defiant trespass and four summary citations, according to court documents.

An acquaintance of Cotten’s called police Wednesday and reported that he showed up at her place of employment and screamed at her about going to her home to get his belongings. Police went to her home, but didn’t encounter Cotten.

She then told police she was terrified of Cotten because on Dec. 28 he held a rifle to her head, and said he was not afraid to shoot her in the head with a different gun, according to an affidavit.

The woman told police Cotten showed up at her place of employment twice after she told him he was not allowed there the first time he showed up, according to the affidavit.

Police said a rifle that was in plain view when they located Cotten at a home on West Sunbury Road was seized.
