Karns City boys basketball turns tide on Union as Brennan Harmon scores 15 in District 9 clash

KARNS CITY — Conventional three-point plays can spark a team to a tide-turning run.

It happened Friday, but with a twist.

When Union’s Owen Bish drove for two, was fouled and hit his free throw, the Golden Knights trailed Karns City by just one point, 34-33 with 6:29 remaining in the third quarter.

The Gremlins used the rest of the quarter to drop a 19-5 run on Union and never led by fewer than eight points the rest of the way in a 66-53 boys basketball victory at home.

“We started to do the little things right,” KC coach Zach Kepple said. “It was evident, especially on the boards, that Union out-worked us in the first half. We started controlling the rebounds in the third quarter.”

Brennan Harmon scored 15 points in the win, draining two of his three treys in the decisive third period.

“We started to play more aggressively, pushing the tempo,” he said. “Over the last few games, we slowed things down too much.”

And it was the result of KC’s last three games — losses to Franklin, Oil City and West Shamokin — that had the Gremlins itching for a win. Thanks to a double-double of 21 points and 13 boards from Shane Peters and balanced scoring from Harmon and Cole Johnston (16 points), this victory was sealed long before the final buzzer.

The Knights (2-5) received 17 points from Trent Fleming and 12 from Bish and Gage Jordan. Union trailed by just four (31-27) at halftime.

“We weathered the storm early, but they hit some big shots in the second half that we just weren’t able to recover from,” Union coach Logan Pistorius said. “We were able to break their press, but turned the ball over a lot in the halfcourt. We were in too much of a hurry.”

The Gremlins (3-6) scored no more than 43 points in three of their losses this season.

“You look at our team, Shane is the only one back who saw a lot of varsity time last year,” Kepple said. “Our other guys have played well, and we have the capability of being good on the offensive end but we are still dealing with some inexperience.”

Both teams return to action Monday on the road. Karns City plays at DuBois Area and Union travels to Brockway.
