PennDOT and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission issued a news release Friday, Jan. 3, advising motorists to avoid unnecessary travel and to exercise caution when driving due to winter weather conditions this weekend.

The release stated that PennDOT intends to implement speed and vehicle restrictions through Monday.

PennDOT stated that it also intends to pretreat road, but cautioned that salting does not guarantee an ice-free road.

The release also advised those traveling to the PA Farm Show to plan an alternate route using a real-time map at 511PA.com.

To those caught in snow squalls, which have been present in Butler County throughout Friday afternoon, PennDOT advised to turn on hazard lights, avoid switching lanes and to pull off the road entirely if need be.
