Larry Karl Szebalskie, 84, of Sarver, passed away on Friday, Jan. 3, 2025, at Allegheny Valley Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Born July 30, 1940, in Clinton Township, he was the son of Karl H. Szebalskie and Carrie E. Dreher Szebalskie.

Larry graduated from Winfield High School in 1958 and Slippery Rock University in 1962. With various National Science Foundation scholarships, he was able to earn his master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh.

It was in 1962 when he joined the faculty at Knoch High School in Saxonburg, where he was a math teacher until his retirement in 1997. Upon retirement, he worked for H&R Block for several years as a tax preparer. He also worked part time at Saxon Golf Course for many years.

In 1966, he married his best friend and loving wife, Carolyn, and together they raised four loving children. He enjoyed taking his family on vacations, especially to the beach. He could be found supporting all of his children’s school and sporting activities.

In his younger years, he was very involved in hunting, fishing and helping with farm work. He was an avid golfer and could occasionally shoot his age at 80. He loved traveling and spending time with his family.

He was very proud of his 13 grandchildren and enjoyed watching them participate in all their activities. He attended numerous baseball, football, volleyball, hockey, soccer and basketball games as well as swim meets and gymnastic events. If he was not at these sporting events, he could often be found on his tractor or with his chain saw working around the property.

Larry was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sarver, where he had served on council and in various capacities.

Surviving are his loving wife, Carolyn (Crawford) Szebalskie; his daughter, Cathy (Bill) Boyer; three sons, David (Michelle) Szebalskie, Gary (Stephanie) Szebalskie and Jeffrey (Kristen) Szebalskie; his sister, Doris Herceg; 13 grandchildren, Olivia and Madilyn Boyer, Megan, Maura, Sarah and Jake Szebalskie, Andrew, Owen, Audrey and Amber Szebalskie and J.J., Zachary and Jocelyn Szebalskie; and his sister-in-law, Arleen (Darryl) Schmidt.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister; and his infant brother, Walter.

SZEBALSKIE — Friends of Larry Karl Szebalskie, who died Friday, Jan. 3, 2025, will be received from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 5, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 6, at FOX FUNERAL HOME, 410 W. Main St., Saxonburg.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Shawn Smith officiating.

Interment will follow in Sarversville Cemetery.
