High school roundup: Seneca Valley wrestling’s Thomas Wuycheck 2nd at Bo Wood; North Catholic wins at Don Graham
Seneca Valley came in fifth with 112 points, and Knoch finished 14th with 46.5 at Indiana High School’s Bo Wood Tournament on Saturday.
Thomas Wuycheck (285 pounds) took home a silver for the Raiders, losing by forfeit to Plum’s Frank Grazulis. Wuycheck had byes to the quarterfinals, advancing to the championship match by pin fall and a 7-3 decision in the semifinals.
Four Raiders made the third-place match, with Riley Smith (107) winning by 15-0 technical fall over Elizabeth Forward’s Warren Woleslagle and Logan Brethauer (121) winning by 17-3 major decision over Plum’s Karter GIlliland. Bryce Berekstazi (114) and Zach Hill (139) lost to finish fourth.
Owen Layhew (145) won the Knights their highest medal of the day, beating Chartiers Valley’s Maksim Rybalko 5-4 for third. Layhew won his first two bouts by tech fall and pin, lost in the semifinals by 5-2 decision and advance to the medal round with another tech fall victory in the blood rounds.
Mars 10th at Ed Driscoll MAC Wrestling Tournament — The Planets scored 72 points at Laurel High School on Saturday. Liam Hein was the lone grappler to make a championship final, losing by 19-2 technical fall to Quaker Valley’s Matthew Danna at 145 pounds.
Hein had a bye to the quarterfinals, where he won by major decision and then again by MD in the semifinals
Three other planets made the podium: Liam Corcoran won the fifth-place match at 172 with a pin of Freedom Area’s Charles Brenckle; Beckett Szczesniak lost his fifth-place match 15-10 to Ellwood City’s Braiden McClure at 107; and Andy Diaz (152) beat Graysen Gardner of West Allegheny 1-0 for seventh.
Corcoran fought his way back through the consolation rounds after losing in the first by pin, racking up a pin and major decision before being pinned again to get to the fifth-place match.
North Catholic rolled over Pine-Richland 75-52 Saturday as Jason Fredericks drained five 3-pointers and finished with 23 points in the Trojans’ home win in the Don Graham Classic.
Jude Rottmann also made five 3s, totaling 19 points.
Freeport 62, Valley 53 — Carson Kane scored 26 and Michael Graczyk 15 in the Yellowjackets’ win Friday night. Kane dropped six 3s.
Slippery Rock 72, Greenville 59 — Josh Book scored a season-high 39 points and grabbed six rebounds in Friday’s victory. Max Kovacik added seven points.
North Catholic beat Pine-Richland 51-42 as three Trojanettes reached double figures in Saturday’s Don Graham Classic, led by Brady Wehner’s 18 points.
Sam Weir and Lauren Reitz each had 13.
Clarion-Limeston 46, Moniteau 38 — Sophia Fleeger scored 14 points, eight of them coming in the fourth quarter, in Saturday’s loss.
Emily Matz and Maddy Eury each had eight points for the Warriors, with Eury adding eight rebounds and four assists. Hannah Diggs scored a game-high 21 for the Lions.
