Butler residents have fun in weekend winter wonderland
It wasn’t too cold for a snowball fight.
Temperatures in the low-20s during the day Saturday, Jan. 4, did not stop children and parents alike from taking in the winter wonderland around Butler. This was the first solid snow this winter for sledding and making snowmen.
Martin Furman, who lives about a block away from Father Marinaro Park, took his son, Ezra, to the hill along Zeigler Avenue on Saturday afternoon.
“Last time we had a little bit of snow, I think earlier in December, we tried to go down near the storage units by McQuiston Elementary, but there wasn’t much snow, it wasn’t that good. This is the first time this winter it’s been good,” Furman said.
The McKeevers took advantage of the snow covered hill and went sled riding. Parents Amy and Isaac McKeever took their daughters, Phoebe, 5, and Lydia, 3, sledding near Father Marinaro Park. After a few runs with her dad, Phoebe took some solo trips on the sled.
Also near Father Marinaro Park, Devin Rodgers pushed his 8-year-old daughter, Sophie Rodgers, around on a sled, both bundled up to help resist the cold air.
Several parents at Father Marinaro Park said they haven’t been able to take their children sledding in a long time, with several mild winters in recent years.
“No, we haven’t been out much, there hasn’t been much snow. We had this sled for a year before we were able to use it,” Shane Stone said, who was enjoying the Marinaro Park hills with his three children.
Whether it was a front yard or one of various parks around Butler, children were in the snow throughout the day. Nadal Jackson played with his sisters, Maisie and Milani Myland, outside their home Saturday. The family’s trampoline was the main battlefield in the snowball fight, as the siblings bounced around trying to avoid getting hit.
Butler saw hazardous conditions Friday, causing school closures and low visibility. The National Weather Service told the Butler Eagle previously that residents should be prepared for a second additional storm Sunday evening.
