Girl Scout goes for the Gold
Lily Maser, a junior at Butler Senior High School, taught children at Butler YMCA how to make animal enrichment crafts Monday, Dec. 30, to earn an Girl Scouts award.
Lily demonstrated how to make bird and squirrel feeders with nothing but a stick and pieces of paper cut into strips, to apply to become a Gold Award Girl Scout. She led a few dozen children in kindergarten through sixth grades in the process of folding the paper strips into a carousel shape around the stick, which ended with them inserting peanuts into the center of the papers. This would make animals have to work a little harder to get to the treats inside, Lily said.
Lily said she wants to be an animal care specialist in the future, and the project she did Monday through the Girl Scouts was a good way to introduce that concept to young children.
According to the Gold Award website, Gold Award Girl Scouts must be in high school, be a registered Girl Scout Senior or Ambassador and they must have completed two Senior or Ambassador Journeys, or have earned the Girl Scout Silver Award and completed one Senior or Ambassador Journey.
