College Street incident leaves 3 dead, 2 hospitalized
Three people have died and another two have been hospitalized after emergency personnel responded Tuesday, Jan. 7, to an incident at 109 College St.
Shortly before 5 p.m., emergency responders were dispatched to assist a 70-year-old male.
First responders on the scene confirmed three individuals, two males and one female, were found dead in the residence. Another two individuals were taken to Allegheny General Hospital.
Butler County chief deputy coroner John Hanovick confirmed carbon monoxide poisoning is suspected.
At least five police cars, a fire truck and an additional Butler fire department vehicle were present at the scene at approximately 5:30 p.m. Butler EMS also responded.
Peoples Gas was notified of the incident as a safety precaution. According to a company representative, gas was off at the residence before technicians arrived and did a safety sweep to ensure there was not a larger issue.
Butler city police refused further comment on the incident as of press time.
If carbon monoxide poisoning is confirmed, the incident will mark the second fatal incident in the county involving the gas in less than a month’s time. In December, an 85-year-old Slippery Rock Township man died accidentally from carbon monoxide poisoning after using a gasoline-powered wood splitter in his garage with the door closed.
