Garbage truck crashes into Armco Credit Union

A garbage truck crashed into the side of the Armco Credit Union Butler branch on Hollywood Drive on Tuesday, Jan. 7. Morgan Phillips/Butler Eagle

The driver of a Waste Management garbage truck was taken to a hospital Tuesday morning, Jan. 7, after the vehicle crashed into the Armco Credit Union building on Hollywood Drive in Butler.

The truck slid down a hillside near the credit union before crashing head-on into the business, located within the Pullman Center Business Park at about 8:45 a.m., according to city police.

The driver suffered minor injuries and was to be taken to a hospital, police said.

Armco Credit Union CEO Randy Cypher said he was grateful no staff members were injured in the crash.

“Right where the truck crashed is where one of our tellers works,” Cypher said. “Luckily, she was sweeping when it happened.”

Cypher also stated that the driver honked the vehicle’s horn and lowered its front lift in order to minimize damage.

Employees of the location were evacuated from the building and used Pullman Center Business Park as shelter from the weather.

Employees were later allowed to collect their personal items before heading home, where they will be allowed to work for the day, Cypher said.

The credit union’s Hollywood Drive location is temporarily closed, the organization posted to Facebook. Customers are asked to visit other locations or use online banking until further notice.

“We are pleased to report that no staff were injured during the accident, and the driver of the truck was taken to the hospital for observation,” the post said. “We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.”

The Butler city police department, Butler Ambulance and Butler Bureau of Fire were among those that responded to the scene. John Malinski Towing was called to remove the truck from the building.
