Knoch boys basketball, on Vinnie DeFelice’s 16 points, pulls away from North Catholic in WPIAL clash

JEFFERSON TWP — For one quarter, Knoch couldn't miss.

That's all the Knights needed.

Knoch sank seven of nine shots from the field, including five 3-pointers Friday night, turning a tie game into a 10-point lead entering the final eight minutes. The Knights held on for a 61-56 win over North Catholic in a key WPIAL Section 1-4A boys basketball game.

"That third quarter is what won us this game," Knights point guard Jackson Bauman said.

Derek Lang sank a pair of treys while Bauman, Liam Avon and Vinnie DeFelice each had one in that third period.

The Trojans (9-5, 4-1) never got closer than five the rest of the way as Knoch defeated North for the first time in 23 years.

The Knights sank 12 of 18 free throws in the fourth quarter, 19 of 26 for the game.

“Their defense kept us from getting into our flow offensively and that's a credit to them,” Trojans coach Jim Rocco said. “They didn't miss enough free throws for us to catch up.”

“We're still going to be working on free throws on Saturday,” a smiling Jackson Bauman said.

DeFelice scored 16 points off the bench to lead Knoch (9-4, 4-1). Lang had 15 points and six rebounds; Bauman 14 points, six rebounds and five assists.

"So proud of the effort of all our kids," Knoch coach Alan Bauman said. "This is a big win for us. Vinnie gave us a huge lift off the bench and Liam Avon played incredible defense.

“Vinnie, Roman DeFelice and Brody (Bauman) give us a good rotation for our fifth spot on the floor. They provide energy and positivity. This was a good comeback performance overall after we struggled in the second half against Deer Lakes the other night.”

Jason Fredericks scored 21 points to lead North. Owen Maddalon had 14 points and three assists, Jude Rottmann 11 points. Rottmann fouled out with 2:01 to play.

The Knights’ biggest lead of the night was 12 points at 49-37 with 5:09 remaining. Knoch held a 28-11 advantage on the boards. Avon had six rebounds, Zane Pacek five.

The game was deadlocked at 26 at halftime. The lead changed hands five times and the score was tied three times over the first two quarters.

The Trojans had the biggest lead of the half at 24-17 with 4:37 left before intermission.

Both teams return to action on Tuesday. Knoch travels to Freeport while North Catholic hosts Deer Lakes.
