Common sense, consideration could solve snow problems

As we learned in the Wednesday, Jan. 8, edition of the Butler Eagle, workers in Forward Township have been having some trouble getting the roads plowed.

It isn’t because of the amount of snow that’s fallen, but rather because they’re encountering cars parked on the side of the road that block their path. That forces them to leave sections unplowed and slows the entire process down.

The issue was the topic of discussion at the Forward Township supervisors meeting. As Mark Wilson, one of the supervisors pointed out, the plow drivers are dedicated, but other people are keeping them from getting their jobs done.

“The members of our road crew are dedicated to keeping our roads in the best possible condition for those using our roads. Their task is made more difficult when parked vehicles interfere with their task,” Wilson said.

There is already an ordinance about leaving cars unattended on the road or the shoulder, but clearly something else needs to be done. Wilson had a suggestion that we endorse.

“Common sense on all our parts would certainly be the best solution,” Wilson said. “Many communities are experiencing the same issue at this time of year.”

We’d go even further: People should pay attention to the weather and move their car if it snows. It’s a basic courtesy that helps you as much as everyone else — and in Forward Township, it might save you a $15 fine.
