High school roundup: Knoch, Moniteau girls basketball teams win big with defense

Neah Ewing had 12 points and Aubrey Spencer another 10 for Knoch girls basketball during a 37-23 win over Freeport on Monday night.

The Knights (5-8, 4-2 WPIAL Section 1-4A) permitted just five points or fewer in three separate quarters.

Nia DiSanti paced the Yellowjackets with 11 points.

Seneca Valley 47, Pine-Richland 40 — The Raiders trailed after the first quarter, but not at the end of any others as Gracie Cato posted 17 points and Natalie Hambly 14.

North Catholic 64, Derry 25 — Brady Wehner, Kate Vislosky and Lauren Reitz all bucketed nine points for the Trojanettes, who were up 38-7 at the midway point.

Union/A-C Valley 42, Forest 29 — Maddy Dehart and Kya Wetzel took control almost from the jump in this one.

Dehart scored a game-high 20 points and finished with a double-double that included 12 rebounds. Wetzel added 13 points and eight boards.

Moniteau 48, Johnsonburg 12 — Sophia Fleeger had a game-high 19 points for the Warriors, while Alyssa Thompson added 12.

Karns City 60, North Clarion 17 — Hanna Dailey had 14 points, Brooklynn Taylor 12 and Naomi Venesky 10 as the Gremlins out-classed the visitors.

Chartiers Valley 57, Mars 41 — Vita Vargo moved closer to the 1,000-point mark with a 12-point performance for the Planets. Cecilia Christy had a game-high 13.

Slippery Rock 67, Sharon 34 — Madison Romanovich (24 points) and CJ Sabo (20) were key for the Rockets on offense in the decisive win.

Boys basketball

Chartiers Valley 68, Mars 65 — Austen Wroblewski’s 32 points weren’t enough to notch a section win over the Colts.

Clarion-Limestone 64, Moniteau 58 — Braden Beachem had 13 points and Connor Ealy 12, but the Warriors fell short at home.

Hockey

Butler snapped a three-game losing streak and won its third game of the PIHL season 4-0 over Richland on Monday night at Frozen Pond Arena.

Four different players scored: Zachary Zandarski, Ethan Geibel, Seamus Griffith and Brayden Hardsock. Griffith added a first-period assist, and Anthony Trombatt dished two assists.

Moon 8, Freeport 1 — Landen Kozma scored the Yellowjackets’ lone goal in the second period to cut the deficit to 3-1.
