Moniteau’s new football coach will be a familiar name.

Former Warriors quarterback and recent varsity assistant and junior high coach Clay Kohlmeyer is expected to be approved Monday night during the next Moniteau School Board meeting as the varsity football team’s next head coach.

Kohlmeyer will replace Bob Rottman, who stepped down Nov. 4 after six seasons and was 9-48 with a District 9 Class 2A semifinal appearance his first year. Moniteau is coming off a difficult 0-10 season in which it had to forfeit a game due to a lack of healthy players.

“I’m from here, I watch them every week,” Kohlmeyer said. “I just want to see it back the way it was when I played.”

Kohlmeyer played quarterback for the Warriors after converting from wide receiver, graduating in 2004. He went on to play in college at Seton Hill and Grove City for two years before getting into coaching at the youth level. He was an assistant on Rottman’s staff for two years as a quarterbacks coach and junior high head coach.

He enjoyed coaching youth football but has wanted to coach varsity for a while. He is bringing in a coaching staff that has experience winning and is “energetic.”

“I’m pumped,” Kohlmeyer said. “I wanted to do this for years, and I’m happy to be here.”

Moniteau athletic director Dylan Beachem said success for Kohlmeyer will not be about wins and losses early, but about building and maintaining roster numbers after years of decline. Beachem said youth program numbers are strong, but that has not translated to the junior high and high school levels, with Moniteau’s junior high team sometimes running just 14 players deep during games.

“It’s going to be a process, for sure,” Beachem said. “I don’t think we could’ve gotten anyone on the planet who (could turn us into a contender right away).”

Kohlmeyer said part of the process for turning around the program will be instilling accountability during offseason workouts, and improving the weight training at the junior high level so kids are more comfortable making the transition from youth football up through junior varsity and varsity against bigger competition.

He expects to be competitive in Year 1, winning a few games and being closer in the rest.

“We’re gonna work hard, and we’re gonna go out there and put on a show on Friday nights,” he said.

This is Beachem’s first major hire since taking over as Moniteau AD nearly one year ago.

Beachem said about 10 people applied for the job, and Kohlmeyer had the best mix of coaching experience, experience in the Moniteau community and ability to connect with players. Beachem said Kohlmeyer was one of his youth coaches growing up.

“He treats them like a human being,” Beachem said.

Kohlmeyer’s hire leaves just one football head coaching position in Butler County left to fill — Seneca Valley’s, which was opened after Ron Butschle resigned in November.
