Slippery Rock school board terminates former principal

SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — Board members voted unanimously on Monday, Jan. 13, to terminate employment for former Moraine Elementary School principal Kristie Shulsky.

No discussion was held related to the termination, and the vote was taken through a roll call. District superintendent Alfonso Angelucci declined to comment on the nature of the termination, simply referring to it as a “personnel situation.”

“We are disappointed in the school board's decision. Dr. Shulsky received positive evaluations from the district every year and did absolutely nothing wrong,” Steven Winslow, legal council for Shulsky, said in a statement released after the meeting. “We are appealing this decision to the Pennsylvania Secretary of Education and are confident the district will be ordered to reinstate Dr. Shulsky as principal of Moraine Elementary.”

Shulsky was originally placed on leave on April 30, 2024, at which point, assistant superintendent Susan Miller took on the principal’s duties for the remainder of the school year.

At a board meeting on May 6, a parent of Moraine Elementary students expressed concerns about the safety of her children.

According to parent Mara Hensel, Angelucci told her over a phone call that Shulsky was escorted out of the school on April 24.

Angelucci said in May that the reason behind her absence was a personnel issue.

Debra DeBlasio was appointed as interim principal for the school on Aug. 12.

Angelucci gave an update on Aug. 12, stating that the district was going through a procedure for personnel matters relating to the situation at Moraine Elementary. He publicly thanked the parents and staff of the school for their patience.

Board members also unanimously approved the hiring of Jessica Parker for the position of director of special education and coordinator of special services. Parker previously worked for the district in various roles.

“I am excited to return to bring some growth, some consistency, some support to all of our teachers,” Parker said.

The next Slippery Rock School Board meeting is scheduled at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 27.
