Three local nonprofits will share a pot of $300,000 in grant funding to boost their community initiatives.

The money comes courtesy of Butler County, which applied for and received an Emergency Solutions Grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community & Economic Development.

A portion of the funding will go to Glade Run Lutheran Services to fund its winter warming center, which provides a free place to stay during the winter for those experiencing homelessness. The warming center is at the Grace Community Wellness Center on West Diamond Street, and is open this season from Oct. 28 through March 31.

While Butler County Commissioner Kevin Boozel said the funding is not 100% of what is required for the agencies to run each of the programs, he added that every little bit helps.

“These are monies that Human Services applies for annually for the warming center,” Boozel said. “It’s been up for three months now. The weather will go into single digits tonight, so I’d say it's a great program.”

Also benefiting from the funding will be Catholic Charities, which will use its funding to bolster rental assistance, rapid rehousing and homelessness prevention programs.

The CARE Center, a mental health organization, will use its portion of the grant funding to enhance its intensive housing case management program.

“(The CARE Center) are the ones that provide outpatient programming and case management,” Boozel said. “They do what they call ‘day centers,’ which is basically where people can go for drop-in and be able to see a doctor.”

The Emergency Services Grant is a federal program intended to aid with homelessness prevention and rapid rehousing programs. In Pennsylvania’s case, the grant is administered by the Department of Community & Economic Development and local governments. Cities, boroughs, townships and counties can apply on behalf of nonprofit organizations.
