‘Phantom vehicle’ involved in crash in Allegheny Township on Jan. 3

All drivers escaped injury after a near head-on collision on slippery Oneida Valley Road in Allegheny Township, which occurred when a sports car swerved into a stopped tractor-trailer in a failed attempt to avoid a collision.

The accident occurred on Friday, Jan. 3 shortly after 2:30 p.m. on Oneida Valley Road, which was covered in snow that day. Due to the road conditions, a Freightliner truck was stopped in the southbound lane.

Another Freightliner in that lane — dubbed a “phantom vehicle” in the police report — crossed the centerline to pass the stopped truck, even though it was a no-passing zone on a two-lane road. As that was happening, a BMW 328i sports car traveling north tried to stop to avoid a collision, but lost traction and slid directly into the stopped Freightliner.

Neither the driver of the BMW nor of the stopped Freightliner was injured or transported to a medical facility, and neither vehicle was carrying a passenger.

According to the police report, the driver of the other Freightliner, who was not named in the report, committed a no-passing violation.
