Vita Vargo became the eighth player in program history to reach 1,000 points Monday night in Mars girls basketball’s victory over Pine-Richland.

Vargo, a senior guard, entered the game needing 15 points to reach the milestone and scored exactly that as the Fightin’ Planets won 37-31 at home. She’s the second player in Butler County, boys or girls, to reach the mark this season; Slippery Rock boys’ Josh Book accomplished it last week.

Catelyn Gentile scored 12 points on three 3-pointers for the Planets (9-6, 3-3 WPIAL Section 3-5A).

Hempfield Area 57, Butler 45 — Amelia McMichael’s 19 points was not enough in Monday’s non-section game.

Avery Maier scored 11 points, and Malina McElroy chipped in nine. The Tornado (8-7, 3-2 Section 1-6A) were without point guard Sydney Patterson.

Knoch 47, Burrell 40 — Neah Ewing scored 17 points, including three 3-pointers for the Knights (7-8, 6-2 Section 1-4A). Karlee Buterbaugh added 11.

General McLane 46, Slippery Rock 43 — CJ Sabo scored 17 points and snagged nine rebounds in Monday’s loss.

Madison Romanovich added 13 points and six boards, and Belle Miller had eight apiece.

Boys basketball

Shane Peters scored 18 points and pulled down a whopping 20 rebounds to lead Karns City to a 57-50 overtime win at North Clarion County on Monday.

Cole Johnston scored 15 points, 10 of them in the second half and overtime, and had five assists and five rebounds. Brennan Harmon added 10 points, eight of them in the fourth quarter and OT, and four boards.
