Sylvester ‘Ches’ Kapalka
Sylvester A. “Ches” Kapalka, 92, of Butler, passed away on Monday, Jan. 20, 2025, at his home.
Born Dec. 31, 1932, in Logans Ferry Heights, he was the son of Andrew Kapalka and Martha Ostrowski Kapalka Cymbol.
Ches served in the U.S. Navy during Korea aboard the USS Gainard.
Ches was an electrician at the U.S. Steel sintering plant in Saxonburg until its closing. He then went to work at Allegheny Ludlum in Leechburg. He also was a self-employed electrical contractor. He was a member of Thorn Creek Methodist Church. Ches was a member of the Saxonburg American Legion Post 683 in Saxonburg, where he was a past commander and a life member of the Saxonburg VFW Post 7376. He enjoyed hunting, going to camp, reading, gardening, cutting firewood and bowling. He was a Reiki Master and practiced other self-healing techniques.
Surviving are wife, Lois (Lawson) Kapalka, whom he married Jan. 18, 1957; his daughter, Valerie Kapalka of Butler; his son, Paul (Diana “Dizy”) Kapalka of Cabot; three sisters, Martha Rhodes of Arnold, Pa., Theresa (Gary) Clark of Louisa, Va., and Sylvia Tatrn of Lower Burrell; one granddaughter, Alyza Kapalka of Saxonburg; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Mack.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Nicholas Cymbol.
KAPALKA — Friends of Sylvester A. “Ches” Kapalka, who died Monday, Jan. 20, 2025, will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24, at FOX FUNERAL HOME, 410 W. Main St., Saxonburg.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Mary Jo Gould officiating.
Interment will follow in Greenlawn Burial Estates.
