College roundup: Knoch grad Mike Formica earns PSAC indoor track honor, SRU basketball beats IUP
Knoch product Mike Formica was named the PSAC men’s indoor track athlete of the week Tuesday.
Formica, a junior distance runner at IUP, set the current high-water mark in the conference this year in the 3000-meter run. He finished third in 8:31.32 in the Youngstown State Collegiate Invitational.
Slippery Rock men’s basketball ended a two-game losing streak with Wednesday’s 75-64 home win over IUP and keeps it in second place in the PSAC West.
With Jomo Goings and Maceo Austin out due to injury, Ike Herster scored a career-high 22 points and added five rebounds and three assists. Day Waters and Luke Howes scored 17 and 16 points, respectively, for SRU (9-9, 5-6).
Endya Robinson scored a team-high and season-high 11 points for The Rock in Wednesday’s 64-48 loss at home to IUP.
SRU (7-11, 4-8 PSAC West) lost its third straight.
Pitt women’s basketball fell 84-57 Thursday to Virginia Tech. MaKayla Elmore and Marley Washenitz tied with 11 points for the Panthers (9-12, 1-7 ACC).
Madilyn Boyer, a Knoch graduate, had her best performance of the season with 21 points and 11 rebounds, both season highs, with her first double-double of the season as Penn State-Behrend beat Alfred State 77-55.
Slippery Rock softball was voted to second in the PSAC West in Thursday’s conference coaches poll, earning three first-place votes and finishing behind IUP.
The baseball team was picked to finish fourth in the west, behind Gannon, IUP and California (Pa.).
