Dr. John ‘Jack’ Jacobs Jr.

Jacobs

Dr. John “Jack” Francis Jacobs Jr., a devoted husband, father, grandfather, medical doctor, and a beloved member of his community, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025, surrounded by his family.

He was the son of the late John and Mary (George) Jacobs and was born Oct. 14, 1947, in Chicago.

Jack was raised in Framingham, Mass. At the age of 18, he attended Johns Hopkins University and earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia. He furthered his training in Ann Arbor, Mich., becoming a highly respected internist and nephrologist.

Jack’s medical career was marked by compassion and leadership. He moved to Akron, Ohio, where he founded his own nephrology practice. Over 34 years, he grew the practice from a solo endeavor to a thriving group of nine nephrologists, serving four counties, multiple hospitals and numerous dialysis centers.

Jack was the innovative mind behind RenalTrax, a groundbreaking system of charting medical information through technology. He earned multiple awards and recognitions for his teaching the future generation of medical doctors at NEOUCOM (Northeast Ohio Medical University). Dr. Jacobs’ tireless dedication and expertise were instrumental in transforming lives, and he left an indelible mark on the medical field.

After retiring in 2012, Jack and his wife of 55 years, Mary “Libby” Jacobs, moved to Wexford, to be near their beloved grandchildren, and later to their current home. In his retirement, Jack continued his skilled woodworking, creating beautiful pieces that will be cherished by his family.

Jack found immense joy in summers spent near the ocean in Cape Cod and Boston, where he created countless precious memories with his family, including his five younger siblings, Patti, Rick, Jamie, Connie and Joel Jacobs.

Above all, Jack was a family man. He was the loving husband of Libby; the proud father of Dr. Shellie Hipsky and John F. Jacobs III, and his daughter-in-law, Johanna Jacobs; plus, he was the adored “Big Jack” to his grandchildren, Alyssa and Jacob. Jack was the cornerstone of his family, and his legacy will endure for generations.

Jack’s life was a testament to love, hard work and unwavering dedication to his family and community. He will be deeply missed but forever celebrated by all who knew him.

In addition to his immediate family, Jack is survived by dear friends and colleagues whose lives he touched profoundly.
