High school roundup: Butler indoor track’s Aaron Stebick, 4x800 relay win races; Mars basketball wins in OT
Butler’s boys indoor track and field team won two events at Saturday’s TSTCA No. 3 meet at Edinboro University.
Aaron Stebick ran the 400-meter in 51.36 seconds, the fourth-fastest time in Butler history. And the 4x800 relay of Brendan Eicher, Logan Rogers, Alex Motonis and Ethan Thomas won in 8:32.15.
The boys 4x400 relay (Grayden Brown, Isaac Miller, Regan Peth, Carter Ekas) finished second in 3:37.13, and Jason Wick finished third in the pole vault with a 13-3, 10th in program history.
Thomas’s 9:00.91 in the 3,000 is the sixth-fastest time in school history and placed him fifth in the race Saturday.
On the girls’ side, Jocie Slesinski and Gracyn Vardy tied for second in the high jump at 5-1, which is 10th in program history. Zari Golojuh ran the fifth-fastest time in Butler history with an 11:17.96 in the 3,000 to claim third in the race.
Mars got back in the win column with a 56-51 overtime win Saturday over South Fayette. Austen Wroblewski scored 21 points to lead the Planets, while Drew Navetta scored 13 and Ben Detisch 10.
Belle Vernon 54, Knoch 50 — The Knights (13-5, 8-1 WPIAL Section 1-4A) could not hang onto a small lead heading into the fourth quarter Saturday. Teegan Finucan scored a team-high 17 points, and Jackson Bauman added 13.
Union 68, Reynolds 24 — Owen Bish scored a game-high 21 points, and Trent Fleming followed suit with 20 of his own in Union’s rout Saturday. Gage Jordan scored 10 points.
Knoch finished fifth at the Sharon Duals on Saturday, going 2-2 in round-robin play before beating Elwood City 40-35 in the fifth-place match.
Owen Layhew went 5-0, as did Wyatt Foster and Jarrett Crowe
The Knights lost to Freedom Area 48-30 in the first match, beat Sharon 48-30, lost to Elizabeth Forward 47-30 and beat West Shamokin 56-11.
