High school roundup: Knoch wrestling bounced from WPIAL Class 2A tournament; Freeport girls basketball rolls
Knoch boys wrestling lost in the WPIAL Class 2A team wrestling preliminary round Monday 41-29 to Greensburg Salem, ending the Knights’ team portion of the postseason.
No stats were available. The Golden Lions will face Burrell in Wednesday’s first round.
The Knights still have the individual postseason next.
Slippery Rock 29th at Fred Bell Tournament — Slippery Rock’s Zac Turberville finished in fourth place at 160 pounds at Saturday’s Fred Bell Tournament at Grove City High School.
Turberville lost 5-2 to Moon’s Liam Costa in the third-place match, capping a 5-2 weekend that included only wins by pin or technical fall.
Slippery Rock came in 29th with 43.5 points.
Nia DiSanti scored a team-high 19 points, and Maggie Conger added 17 as the Freeport girls basketball rolled to a 55-38 section win Monday night over Valley.
The duo scored 25 of those points in the first half as Freeport roared out to a 37-20 lead.
Sophia Glass scored nine points in the win.
North Catholic 52, Burrell 28 — Brady Wehner and Sam Weir both poured in 14 points as North Catholic nearly doubled up Burrell. The Trojanettes allowed six points or fewer in three different quarters.
Seneca Valley 60, North Hills 44 — Gracie Cato (21 points) and Natalie Hambly (20) combined for 41 of the Raiders’ points in a section win over the Indians.
Slippery Rock 37, Greenville 31 — CJ Sabo and Madison Romanovich had 15 points each in the Rockets’ win. The latter added 12 rebounds and four assists.
Montour 57, Mars 53 — Cecilia Christy and Vita Vargo both had 17 points and three 3-pointers, but their efforts weren’t enough in the loss.
Oakland Catholic 55, Knoch 32 — Neah Ewing paced the Knights with 14 points.
North Catholic 80, Freeport 57 — Jude Rottmann had 21 points in the Trojans’ WPIAL Section 1-4A road win. Danny King and Carson Kane tied for the Yellowjackets’ lead with 11 apiece.
Kendall Kren (200-yard freestyle), Raely FaJohn (200 individual medley, 100 breaststroke), Maddy Gauselmann (50 free), Tessa Szymanski (100 butterfly), and Mollie Massella (500 free) all contributed with solo victories as Slippery Rock’s girls downed Franklin 109-61. Roan Stauffer (200 free, 100 backstroke) was a double winner as the Rockets’ boys bowed to Franklin 85-44.
Anthony Trombatt scored two goals, and Seamus Griffith and Brayden Hardsock scored one each in Butler’s 7-4 loss to Wheeling Park in PIHL action Monday night.
Butler downed Plum 796-61x to 787-35x. No further details were provided.
